The underlying competencies of Business Analysis

Morgan T. Lee

Anyone that has been working as a business analyst (BA) for a while should know that there is more to being a BA than just requirements gathering and creating the Business Requirements Document (BRD). Over time, a successful BA will should assemble their own BA toolkit and learn a number of BA techniques, but there is a key aspect of business analysis that everyone should be aware of, the underlying competencies. Underlying Competencies are the skills, knowledge, and characteristics of a BA that help support their activities.  Some underlying BA competencies include:

Analytical Thinking and Problem-solving;

Behavioral Characteristics;

Business Knowledge;

Communication and Interaction skills; and

Technology.

For more information about underlying competencies, please see the BABOK v2, Page 15.
